Lower Your Energy Bill During Summer

After a week of record-breaking summer temperatures in DFW, you may be scared to look at your utility bill for the month. Since fall is still several weeks away, CB JENI Homes is compiling easy ways for you to not only lower your energy bill during summer, but to also keep your home temperature cooler!

Limit Power Usage

It seems like a no brainer, but limiting your power usage during the day, especially during those 100-degree scorchers, will significantly help lower your energy bill and keep your home cooler. Your air conditioner has to work harder to cool the house when appliances like the oven, clothes dryer and dishwasher are running. Plan to do these chores during low-demand times or in the evening to save between 5-25 percent.

Program Thermostat

You can save as much as 10 percent a year on heating and cooling by simply programming your thermostat back 7-10 degrees for 8 hours a day. Smart home technology – like the Ecobee 4 in select CB JENI Homes’ communities – makes it even easier by connecting to your smart phone.

When you’re at home, set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible to increase your potential savings. Some studies estimate for every degree higher you set your thermostat over 78 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer, you could in turn save between 6-8 percent off your energy bill.

Home Maintenance

There are many simple tasks you can perform to make your home more energy efficient. Check vents and replace old air filters. Caulk and seal cracks near doors or windows to reduce your utility bill by 15-30 percent. Perform routine maintenance of your air conditioner and HVAC units. Replace all lights with LED bulbs to save an estimated $75 per year or more. Reduce your water heater temperature to 120 degrees. Add cellular shades or other energy efficient window treatments to help keep the heat out. All of these simple tasks add up to big savings!
